1:1 and Devices Staying at School

Strategy with this Model

Every student is assigned their own device. The devices live at school over night, and students use them during the day.  This can happen in one of two ways:

  1. Devices Move  The devices are stored in one location and students pick them up in the morning, then take them from class to class all day.  At the end of the school day students return the devices to the charging station.
  2. Devices Stay  The devices are stored in classrooms and remain in the classroom.  Students retrieve devices and return devices in each classroom as needed.

Advantages of the “Devices Move” model

  • Devices are charged daily and are in the classroom ready for students each morning.
  • Districts reduce spend on device repair or replacement due to fewer damaged or lost devices.
  • Teachers save time at the start of each class period not dealing with device issues.

Challenges of the “Devices Move” model

  • The district needs to plan for the budget expense of having a charging and storage solution for all devices.
  • Devices may get lost or damaged in transport between classes.
  • For learn-at-home days the district needs a plan to have devices and chargers at home for students.

Solutions for the “Devices Move” model

  • Place charging stations in a classrooms or a central location, such as a library, for students to retrieve devices daily.
  • Have students return devices to a charging station at lunch, gym class or recess to reduce damage during downtime.
